Daughterhood
Ink painted with a stick on paper
90 x 58 cm - Framed floating in an elegant Black Shadow Box Frame with Art Glass
I had the idea for this painting three years before I was in the perfect place, at the perfect time to bring it to life. On my birthday on August 20th, 2023 I was at the base of Kalkajaka (at the BMUP site). I had asked for the trust of seven women who hardly knew me to meet me in the morning, walk into the forest and pose nude for me for a painting idea I had. It was bold of me and even more bold of them to agree. Walking and chattering as we made our way through the forest, the found ourselves relaxing the deeper into the forest we walked. I was nervous because I was asking a lot of these women, to be vulnerable in an open space. I wanted to make sure everyone felt safe and protected, comfortable, but most of all natural. We found the most beautiful trees and I asked everyone to pick their own to hold and connect to. I don’t care what people think, hugging trees is a beautiful and grounding action.
I hold deep gratitude to all of these women for trusting in me and the idea, as we were mostly strangers to one another. It was the most beautiful morning to connect as women and feel that innate sisterhood.
