Daughter of Reverence
Ink painted with Ink and Stick on paper
70 x 56cm
On our first trip to the Black Mountain Unplugged site under Kalkajaka Kathy Powell and her daughter Agnes Dear took Jack and I for a walk through the forest on the property. I loved watching mother and daughter, both bare foot, gently walk on the land treading a delicate path that was known only to eyes that had walked that path so many times before.
I remember Agnes reaching out and touching the leaves of trees and tenderly reciting their scientific names. It was clear to me the reverence both Kathy and Agnes held for the land and I felt so deeply respectful of them both. The time it takes to learn a landscape the way they knew it is purely time spent being in and observing a place.
When you take the time to learn of the living world around you it changes your perspective on all things. This is a rare find in humans. I thoroughly enjoy Kathy and Agnes’ company for this reason. Both women have a great awareness of life around them, this is a great gift to all of us who have the honour of knowing them.
So the idea of this painting came to me on that first walk through the forest under Kalkajaka. Agnes bows in respect and reverence to the Cassowary, a bird endemic to the country she was raised on - FNQ. A bird that is rare to find. As is the kind of pure soul that is Agnes.
